  • Similar to enabling the GD Library in the php.ini file, one can also enable the mbstring library in the php.ini file on their server. By default, php comes with the mbstring library, however, it is disabled by a ‘comment out’ in the php.ini file within your server’s php directory.

I am trying to find a way to install php7.2-mbstring into Ubuntu 18.04, but I can't find find it.sudo apt-get install php7.2-mbstring responds with not finding it. According to the Cannonical and the Debian site, this packet exists though. Is there any special thing to do to get this package? If you want to have mbstring work on a LAMP server with yum (Fedora, Redhat, Centos) or apt-get (Ubuntu, Debian) then do this 1) As root from the CLI yum install php-mbstring or in the apt-get case apt-get install php-mbstring. Preflight

  • Logged in as root or a user with sudo privileges

Step 1: Update the apt package tool to ensure we are working with the latest and greatest.

apt update && upgrade

Step 2: Install PhpMyAdmin and PHP extensions for managing non-ASCII string and necessary tools.

apt install phpmyadmin php-mbstring php-gettext

During this installation you’ll be asked for the web server selection, we will select Apache2 and select ENTER.

In this step, you have the option for automatic setup or to create the database manually. For us, we will do the automatic installation by pressing ENTER for yes.

At this setup, you’ll be asked to set the PhpMyAdmin password. Specifically for the PhpMyAdmin user, phpmyadmin, you’ll want to save this in a secure spot for later retrieval.

Step 3: Enable PHP extension.

phpenmod mbstring
